An Examination Of The Potential Health Impacts Of Radiofrequency Electromagnetic Radiation Report Of The Standing Committee On Health Canada (HESA)
In response to the rising expression of health concerns about radiofrequency electromagnetic radiation in Canada, on March 30, 2010, the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health conducted a study (HESA). The Committee heard from a variety of witnesses including government officials, industry groups and scientific experts. This report summarizes their testimony at the hearings. It also identifies ways in which the federal government could take further action. The independent experts counseled that we should immediately implement better precautionary standards. Contrary to Health Canada and Federal Gov’t claims, they state that Canadian guidelines are among the poorest in the world in that Safety Code 6 allows for the highest exposure levels and provides the poorest level of protection from this recognized WHO Class 2B carcinogen. They call on our elected representatives to provide a place to receive reports of adverse reactions to EMR emitting devices and to ensure that Health Canada’s mandate and operations are acting in the best interests of the health of Canadians and not the health of industry. They also caution that evidence of claims made by industry proponents is lacking. Almost no progress has been made towards implementation of the recommendations.
